La valeur sensation : le cas du surf

Abstract : The definition of ethics in surfing is complex. On the one hand, the French Federation of Surfing, while trying to propose its defense of the values common to the surfers, applies a classical sporting ethics taking again principles of fair play and security. In addition, of the practitioners without affiliation self-regulate surfing thanks to a system of fluctuating usual rules, and a system of values built on the senses. Consequently the question of the legitimacy of the definition of sporting ethics in surfing arises : « Through the codes, values, and the representations, the sporting actors tie alliances or develop oppositions for the legitimate definition of sporting ethics. But to fit in the universe of the sport, all agree to refer to it to promote it, transform it or fight it. In a certain manner, ethics founds the existence of the sport and of the sporting community but, also, it brings the fence of the sporting universe. Ethics draws its contents in the social references but it transports and transfigures these references for better coding them and sacrilizing them. At the same time, it condenses them to produce a idealized form of the relationship between the individual and the company. Ethics subsumes the expression of the sporting forms and the vision symbolic system of the sporting universe in a general system of representations which are articulated around the corporeity and of social development. » (Pigeassou, 1997). A characteristic of surfing, that Pigeassou does not raise is that the practitioners do not refer to uneethic sporting classic but to an ethics built on the senses. Those, although individual, are shared by the surfers and offer a common base of references. Surfing thus proposes another ethical model, where to make body with the ocean is largest of the values.
