Zur Behandlung von parenthetischen Einschüben in Lehrwerken des Deutschen

Abstract : This article deals with approaches to parentheses and traces the evolution of their analyses from the 17th century to the first half of the 19th century in didactic and pedagogical works on the German language. The corpus is composed of grammars, commentaries of grammars and works of style theory. Until the middle of the 18th century, parentheses are mentioned, as in the rhetorical tradition, in semantic, syntactic, stylistic or pragmatical perspectives, as well as in their role as punctuation marks, but the definitions are rather vague and the analysis without depth. In the second half of the 18th century, probably due to the clarity-topos of Enlightment, parentheses are evaluated in an increasingly negative manner, the hypothesis being that they “split up” the sentence, weakening or even destroying its coherence. At the same time, a certain pragmatization of the contemporary linguistic thinking, the growing interest for punctuation rules and the necessity to improve German writing skills seem to lead to a more detailed analysis of the use of parentheses and to an increased consideration for their communicative usefulness. These latter views, combined with the sharpening of syntactic tools of analysis, constitute the background to various in-depth studies carried out in the first third of the 19th century in which parentheses figure prominently and are characterized by rather precise definitions along with significant theoretical considerations in the fields of syntax, semantics, pragmatics and now also textual analysis.
